Uri Kaufman

Uri Kaufman is the CEO of Harmony Group, a commercial real estate investment and development firm located in Albany, New York. He founded the company to combine his passion for historic preservation with his drive to help revitalize neglected communities. At Harmony Group, he focuses on transforming aging industrial structures into residential properties that respect their original architectural character while contributing to the long-term revitalization of the neighborhood.

Together with Uri's business partner, Ira Schwartz, he has established a strong record of finding undervalued properties and redeveloping distressed assets. Their work involves managing highly complex development projects across the United States, with a focus on thoughtful execution and lasting community impact.

Kaufman began his professional career as an attorney in Long Island after graduating with honors from New York University School of Law in 1989. Following a job loss early in his legal career, he shifted his focus to real estate. He recognized the potential in many historic buildings throughout Upstate New York and saw an opportunity to convert them into modern residential lofts while maintaining their original charm.

This insight led to the founding of Harmony Group. Since then, his work has centered on restoring historic buildings and adapting them to fit contemporary residential needs. His efforts have been recognized at both the national and state levels. Kaufman is recognized for his ability to coordinate with stakeholders, secure historic tax credits, and ensure the use of union labor, all while completing projects within regulatory frameworks and timelines.

In addition to his real estate work, he is also an author. In April 2025, he published American Intifada: Israel, the Gaza War and the New Antisemitism, a book examining political attitudes toward Israel. In 2023, he released Eighteen Days in October: The Yom Kippur War and How It Created the Modern Middle East. The book reflects over twenty years of research, including visits to battlefields, interviews with veterans, and reviews of declassified documents translated from Hebrew, Arabic, Russian, and German. The work received critical acclaim from well-known media outlets and public figures.

His writing has appeared in publications such as Foreign Affairs, Newsweek, The Jerusalem Post, and The Independent. Kaufman earned his undergraduate degree from Queens College (CUNY), attending night classes while working. He currently lives with his family in Lawrence, Nassau County, Long Island. In his time, he enjoys reading, biking, and playing hockey.
